It was towards the end of the 1880s.
The town was asleep. The houses leaned wearily against one another like sleepy travellers in a railway carriage. Some were small, crippled and hunched up like worn-out old beggar women. Others stood there, large and haughty, like town councillors in the courtroom.

Governor of Halland, 1812–1816
A Night at Halmstad Castle
As I lie there, staring at the lights that were to keep me company for the rest of the night, I see a large, dark and majestic shadow slowly and solemnly glide past the rose-coloured curtain. I immediately got up. There was no living creature in my room or in the adjoining rooms.
Whose shadow was it?

Halmstad, the residence town of Halland, enjoys a beautiful setting on the River Nissan, whose salmon, with its rosy-red flesh, fetches a higher price on the Swedish market than any other.
Cawing jackdaws perch on the chimneys of the old castle, which is now the Governor’s residence. In the garden, century-old cherry trees are trained against the gate; lilacs and other bushes are also found there in abundance, all in full bloom.

Halmstad is generally situated in a beautiful setting, and in several places the town is surrounded by the most picturesque and romantic scenery.
Until just a few decades ago, Halmstad was rich in historic architecture, but in recent years modern building vandalism has proceeded ruthlessly, destroying much of what was most characteristic and interesting in this respect.
